God Damn! That's how you describe this flick in two words. First of all I want to say that I went to see it without knowing anything about it except for the fact that it was made by Mr. Lynch, I went because the monkey (Val) really wanted to see it Now a little something about the story: a black limo is driving down "Mullholand Drive" (which is a road in the hills of L.A), the limo crashes with another car. And from the wrecks of the limo comes out a mysterious woman. She wonders into a house of an actress that is away to shoot a film. To the house also comes Betty which is the niece of the actress, she comes to live there while her aunt is away. She meets the mysterious woman that adapts the name Rita. Together they try to solve the mystery of Rita's past and help Betty become a famous actress. Now, it sounds fairly normal, doesn't it? But in fact that doesn't even describe one tenth of what is going on there. There is just no way for me to describe that flick, there are just too many things going on at once and half of them have nothing to do with the story (or they do, but the connection between them is above me). In the words of Mr. Monkey the flick is somewhat of a mixture between "Blue Velvet" and "Lost Highway", I can't agree with the monkey about the second one (mainly because I haven't seen it yet) but it sure was similar to "Blue Velvet ". Before I've seen "Mullholand Drive" I thought that it was the strangest flick I've ever seen, maybe it is. They were both made in the same style, Lynch style, which is: to put some things together that have no connection between them . No, there is much more to his style but that is one of his characteristic. If we were to compare the two flicks I'd say that "Mullholand Drive" is much better, but much stranger. Mostly because it was shot a lot better and it has a good music, better story and a bigger budget. The flick creates a strange, very special environment, and puts you in a mood that I just can't describe, and that's something you have to admire in Lynch. Also I liked it for the look it left on everybody's faces when it ended, when they saw that there are no answers in the end. Imagine all those people sitting there and watching two and a half hours of Linch fucking with their minds, messing thing up and complicating the story even farther… and right then when you think you are about to get some answers to this crazy shit that have been happening in the last two and a half hours …right then the flick ends. My first reaction was to think that it was a scam, that he scammed me the bastard. I think that he shot this flick especially to scam people, to come and pay money for it and by that make him even richer. That made me mad, and do you know what happens when cows mad? no… well I don't either, but it can't be good. Anyways, there are two options for how I can grade it:
